Marist Youth Movement
The first Marist Youth gathering took place on the campus of Marist College in Poughkeepsie New York over Memorial Day weekend in 2001. Since then, this has become an annual event gathering students from all of our Marist schools in the United States, Mexico, Canada and Puerto Rico. These gatherings draw our students together and foster the Marist spirit and charism of Marcellin Champagnat in their lives.
The focus of Marist Youth is on what it means to be young, Catholic, and Marist. Students left Marist College with new insights into what it means to be "Marist," and a wonderful understanding that "Marist" is much bigger than their own schools.
The mission of Marist Youth at Saint Joseph Academy is to help all members of our community to recognize their call as Marists. All of us are called to share in the mission of Father Champagnat: To make Jesus known and loved and to reach out in solidarity to our neighbors, especially the least favored. The Marist Youth “Core Group” has decided to focus their energies on three aspects of the Marist charism: Spirituality, Service, and Solidarity.
Saint Joseph Academy’s Marist Youth moderators meet regularly with Marist Youth leaders (15 students) on Wednesdays before school. These meetings begin with prayer and reflection, followed by presentations on upcoming Marist Youth projects by leaders and moderators. Members suggest ideas for future projects and give feedback on previous ones. Events are setup to include all Saint Joseph Academy students who wish to participate. Events in the fall include Marist Day of Service and World Hunger Day collection. Spring projects include a fun-run to raise awareness for local and global issues. Marist Youth's biggest event is Operation Prom, which is a national organization providing prom dresses for local students referred by high school counselors in our community.
