At Saint Joseph Academy, there is something for everyone. We have over 35 clubs and organizations. All clubs are student-led, which provides our students the opportunity to develop the leadership skills that they will need after high school. 

Participation in student activities is an integral part of school life. Students are encouraged to be involved in ways that are consistent with their talents and interests.     The Saint Joseph Academy Bloodhound Ambassadors (BAs) are the student philanthropic arm of the Saint Joseph Academy Office of Academy Advancement and Alumni Affairs. 

    This group is made up of students from all grade levels and are chosen through an application and an interview process. The goals of this group are raising money to give back to the school, teaching your peers about the importance of philanthropy and staying involved with 

    the Academy after graduation. As a group, members will learn the different ways non-profits solicit funds and the importance of cultivating and stewarding donor relationships.

Throughout the year, the compassionate students of SJA extend a helping hand, dedicating their time to volunteer at Good Neighbor. They actively participate in preparing and serving meals, contributing to the invaluable assistance provided to the patrons of this vital community resource.

    Marist Youth is a global network of young people who are inspired by the Marist educational tradition and spirituality.   • Model UN

    Model United Nations (Model UN) is an educational simulation and academic activity where students role-play as delegates representing different countries or organizations within the United Nations (UN). Participants engage in debates and discussions on various global issues, such as peace and security, human rights, environmental sustainability, and international development.


    During Model UN conferences, delegates work together to draft resolutions, negotiate with other delegates, and address complex international problems. They research their assigned country's policies and positions on specific issues and advocate for their interests while also considering the perspectives of other nations.


    Model UN conferences typically follow parliamentary procedures similar to those used in actual UN meetings. They provide students with opportunities to enhance their public speaking, negotiation, critical thinking, and diplomatic skills while gaining a deeper understanding of international relations and global affairs.


    Model UN is popular in schools, colleges, and universities worldwide, offering students a platform to develop leadership abilities, build cross-cultural understanding, and foster a sense of global citizenship. It serves as a valuable tool for empowering young people to become informed and engaged citizens capable of addressing the challenges facing our interconnected world.

  • Performing Arts

    The SJA Performing Arts Program provides opportunities to develop both performance techniques and technical skills for grades 7-12th.  The curriculum helps students discover and develop their unique skills and talents through an intense, integrated arts program with high standards that combines critical thinking and a whole-person developmental approach to using their talents both on and off stage. Participation in the performing arts club is year-round as productions and rehearsals are happening throughout the school year. Students may take Survey of Theatre, History, and Performance, an exploration of theatre history from its earliest known origins. The examination begins with Ancients Egypt to the current 21st Century or Performing Arts, where students will examine improvisation, the audition process, monologues, duets and group scenes, movement, voice and diction, playwriting, Shakespeare, and theatre literature.

  • Positive Peer Leadership Team

    The Positive Peer Leadership Team (PPLT) is a group of students from 8th through 12th who are selected by their teachers based on character, grades, and talent. PPLT members must be responsible students, uphold high moral standards, and be willing to speak or perform in front of an audience. Each year, five seventh graders are selected to join the team in the spring and other grade-level students are nominated when there is a vacancy. PPLT currently consists of a total of twenty-five students. 


    PPLT is involved in a number of activities both on campus and in the community. The team is responsible for the organization of the Red Ribbon Week activities at Saint Joseph Academy.  Throughout the week, members make intercom announcements on important facts of substance abuse. In addition, the team organizes a Red Ribbon Rally at some of the elementary feeder schools to raise awareness and help promote drug prevention among the youth.

    Throughout the year, PPLT members help when needed in different types of service projects or hospitality at our school. Outside of school, PPLT members perform community service each month. Prior to COVID, students socialized with the residents of Alta Vista Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, a local nursing home by engaging them in a fun game of "Loteria." Currently, members design and create get well cards or positive message cards for a local nursing home and our two local hospitals. Additionally, PPLT members do several chalk art projects around campus and at the hospital.

    The Saint Joseph Academy Rotary Interact Club is a wonderful group of high school students who learn leadership skills and serve the community. They organize two service projects every year, one locally and one internationally. They also have the chance to attend leadership camps and apply for Rotary Youth Exchange programs. The SJA Rotary Interact Club is guided and supported by the Historic Brownsville Rotary Club and is part of the global family of official Rotary Clubs.

    The Spanish Honor Society is an academic organization that recognizes and celebrates excellence in the study of the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. It is typically open to high school students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in Spanish classes and have a passion for Hispanic culture, language, and literature.


    Members of the Spanish Honor Society often participate in activities that promote the Spanish language and foster cultural understanding within their school and community. 

    In addition to promoting academic excellence and cultural awareness, the Spanish Honor Society provides opportunities for leadership development, community service, and collaboration among its members. It serves as a platform for students to further explore their interest in Spanish language and culture while making meaningful contributions to their school and society.


    Induction into the Spanish Honor Society is typically based on criteria such as GPA in Spanish classes, overall academic achievement, involvement in Spanish-related activities, and a commitment to promoting cultural understanding and appreciation.      The primary purpose of a student council is to serve as a voice for the student body, facilitate communication between students, faculty, and administration, and initiate positive changes that enhance the overall school experience.


    Members of the student council typically hold various leadership positions, such as president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and class representatives. They are responsible for organizing events, addressing student issues, implementing student-led initiatives, and representing the student body in discussions with school administrators.


    Student councils often play a crucial role in planning and coordinating school activities, such as dances, fundraisers, spirit weeks, and community service projects. They also serve as a forum for students to express their ideas, concerns, and suggestions for improving school culture, academic programs, and extracurricular activities.


    Participating in student council provides students with valuable opportunities to develop leadership, communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.   • Say What Bloodhounds

    The Student and Youth Work Hard Against Tobacco (Say What) movement is funded by the Texas Department of State Health Services through a contract with the Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC) at Texas State University. Say What is the official statewide youth tobacco and vape prevention coalition. Each year, depending on the grants provided by the TxSCC, members are selected to join the team in the fall and must attend a local one-day spring seminar and only a few members get to attend a four-day summer conference. Say What Bloodhounds currently students from 9th through 12th grade who are selected by the Moderator based on demonstrated interest, character, talent, healthy living, and good academic standing. Say What Bloodhounds must be responsible and respectful students, who uphold high moral standards, and are willing to speak or perform in front of an audience. Say What Bloodhounds are involved in a number of activities on campus and in the community with the goal of educating students on the dangers of using nicotine and vapes. During the March prevention week, members make intercom announcements on facts related to the dangers of nicotine and vaping. In addition, members are responsible for putting on a youth-led campus assembly. In the community, members will assist in nicotine and vaping awareness and prevention projects assigned by the moderator. The goal of Say What Bloodhounds, along with many other youth from across the state, is to unite in raising awareness on the dangerous effects of tobacco and e-cigarette usage and the addictive nature of nicotine.

    The UNICEF/SJA partnership embodies a commitment to global citizenship and compassionate action. Together, they champion the rights and well-being of children worldwide through advocacy, fundraising, and awareness initiatives. Through various projects and events, students at Saint Joseph Academy collaborate with UNICEF to support critical programs that address issues such as education, healthcare, and emergency relief.
